Confidential Reporting on Structural Safety

Updated: Apr 24, 2020

Structural failures do occur. Whilst they are rare, it's important that the construction community can learns and reduces the chance of it happening again.

Failure can cost lives and large sums of money and unfortunately it seems the construction sector often prefers to hide failure for fear of consequences and loss of reputation.

To combat this, CROSS (Confidential Reporting on Structural Safety) is an organisation that allows the construction industry to share information on failures in a confidential manner. Their quarterly newsletters publish non-identifying information on reported failures and offer insightful commentary.

Failures linked to steelwork and steel connections often feature, with the recurring themes of poor design due to lack of technical understanding, poor communication through the supply chain and lack of appreciation for the significance of connection design on overall structural behaviour.

CROSS newsletters are a must-read for all designers in the construction industry and can be found here: CROSS Newsletters website (note this link leads outside of Smartbuild Engineering's website).
